Reds’ away form no continuation of last season’s travails

Liverpool were far from convincing away from home in the Premier League in 2023/23, losing eight and drawing five of their top-flight road games. Three of their six away wins came from the last four opportunities of the season, with two of those coming against sides that ended up relegated.

At first glance they don’t appear to have improved drastically in this regard, with just two wins from their opening six away days this time around. However, closer analysis suggests they’re far more capable of upsetting the odds in Manchester than road results so far might indicate.

They’ve already played Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham and Brighton – beating the Magpies, coming seconds from a draw in north London despite two sending’s off and winning the possession and shot counts in their 2-2 stalemate against the Seagulls.

That suggests they’re more than capable of putting up stern resistance at the Etihad against hosts that have already dropped points in three games this season without playing a side that look half as good as Liverpool have done in recent weeks.

Tip: Liverpool double chance @ 6/5

Goal glut a given in the Premier League’s new Clasico

Eight of the last 10 clashes between City and Liverpool have rewarded over 3.5 goals backers and it’s difficult to see that changing this time around despite generous odds of 5/4.

City are scoring home league goals at a rate of just over three per game so far this season (16 in five) and Erling Haaland has struck a ridiculous four braces in his last five games for the club.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have bagged twice or more in six of their last eight away games in all competitions. The two games in that sequence in which they failed to net at least two goals were their nine-man loss to Tottenham a draw at Luton when they notched one despite taking 18 shots.

Tip: Over 3.5 goals @ 5/4

Salah the anytime value in collision of the goal machines

The aforementioned Haaland is strictly build-a-bet-garnish at 8/13 to net anytime in this fixture and while he’s highly likely to do so there’s a lot more to like about backing his Liverpool counterpart.

Mohammed Salah has netted 10 Premier League goals to Haaland’s 13 so far in 2023/24, but he has the better recent record in this contest. The Egyptian netted in all four of the sides’ clashes last term, whereas the younger man scored just once against Liverpool during the same period.

Salah, as always, will have first refusal on penalties, adding further value to his odds.

Tip: Mohamed Salah to score @ 15/8
