Gerhard "George" Lachmann Mosse ( – ) was a German-born, Jewish-American social and cultural historian, who emigrated from Nazi Germany to Great Britain and then to the United States.
First published in 1985, German Jews Beyond Judaism is George L. Mosse’s sweeping exploration of German Jewish secular identity across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Germany, Jews were emancipated at a time when cultural education was becoming an integral part of German society.
In his posthumously published memoir, Confronting History, he relates a story of childhood mischief. The Soviet ambassador to Germany, G.V. Chicherin, arrived at the Mosse estate in Berlin for dinner wearing a tuxedo.
