Subramania Bharati, Indian writer of the nationalist period, regarded as the father of the modern Tamil literary style. In Madras (Chennai) he joined the Tamil daily newspaper Swadesamitran.

Subramania Bharati was a journalist, a linguist and a passionate freedom fighter. He wrote revolutionary articles for magazines like Swadesimitran and India, and lived in Pondicherry for 10 years to avoid being arrested by the British.

Bharati was born on 11 December 1882 in the village of Ettayapuram, to Chinnaswami Subramania Iyer and Lakshmi Ammal. Subbaiah, as he was named, went to the M.D.T. Hindu College in Tirunelveli.
