I am trying to open an opj (from Origin, the data visualization tool) in python but I haven't been able to find a way to know if it's even possible. I downloaded PyWavefront to give it a shot but it seems that it was directed to Blender files instead, which are also opj apparently.

I just call this answered. opj_encode is failing because opj_start_compress is not succeeding. Putting in a check to verify the success of opj_start_compress before encoding fixed the seg fault.
You have to set BUILD_JP3D=ON in cmake. Then it will appear to you bin/jp3d/opj_jp3d_compress and bin/jp3d/opj_jp3d_decompress binnaries.
If you are changing the project properties from dynamic to static linkage as specified in the openjpeg.h you have to specify preprocessor that can use the static linkage..so in addition to changing the property from dynamic to static, add the preprocessor OPJ_STATIC... For example:
