At least in technical use, 'redundant' does not have the same unnecessary duplication meaning that 'superfluous' does. For example you may have a redundant power supply on a quality electronics device or redundant control systems on an aircraft. In both cases, the redundant system is there to take over if the other fails, and so is not superfluous but a requirement for creating reliable systems.
