Physicians assess and diagnose pressure sores by clinical observation and usually can assign a stage (I-IV); other tests include laboratory studies of the blood, bone scans, X-rays, MRIs, and/or bone biopsies to more accurately stage pressure sores. The majority of pressure sores are stage I or II.
