Spanking done correctly isn't abuse. Almost every person on this thread that was anti spanking and was spanked was spanked incorrectly. For those that were spanked correctly they didn't take issue with spanking once in a while. It's my opinion in general people get far too involved in what goes on in others homes.
Spanking in anger, I think everyone agrees, is not the right way to ever go about it. I would venture the opinion that pre-meditated also carries the potential to harm, psychologically. I'm not judging anyone. We all want what's best for our babies, and we're on our own paths to get it.

For me, spanking should only be part of your game plan. To leave it at just a spanking is dropping the ball on an opportunity to train the child. However, to merely use problem solving skills, like Love and Logic is also only half of what a child needs to learn that defiance is not tolerated.
Outright 'wap-wap-wap-' spanking on a child that small isn't needed. NOW- what they are going to have to be careful of is not getting all bent out of shape at the parent who swats- one swat- the butt of a toddler reaching for the hot stove after being told not to.
We spank in our home, too, but I have found that for most of the offenses it works best to use a "natural consequence" to train them. In all cases, if the offense warrants a spanking we always follow through with a natural consequence.
