The K08 provides support for an intensive, mentored research career development experience in biomedical or behavioral research, including translational research.

NCI-specific guidance on the overlap between K08 applications and the mentor’s pending/active grants: It is expected that the Research Plan be based on the candidate’s original ideas and/or hypotheses.

The purpose of the K08 award is to provide individuals who have a clinical doctoral degree with an intensive, supervised, research career development experience.

“Individual mentored CDAs (e.g. K01, K07, K08, K22, K23, K25, K99/ROO) provide support for a sustained period of “protected time”(generally three, four or five years) for intensive research career development under the guidance of an experienced mentor or sponsor in the biomedical, behavioral or clinical services.

Individuals are eligible for a K08 award if they have been, or currently are the PI of an NIH small grant (R03) or exploratory/developmental grant (R21) or a PHS or non-Federal award that duplicates the provisions or research goals of an R03 or R21 grant.

The K08 award is available to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree. K08 applicants applying to the NIMH should have no more than 6 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the initial or resubmission application.

K08 Parent Announcements are available. Parent announcements are broad funding opportunities that applicants can use to submit investigator-initiated applications for a range of popular programs.

The Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) is designed to provide "protected time" for clinically trained individuals to receive intensive, supervised research training in biomedical research related to neurological disorders.
