Civil war swords and knifes are being remade by blacksmiths which makes it even more scary trying to collect them. I now stay away from the civil war stuff unless its guarenteed for life by the seller and that normally dont or wont happen because alot of times the person selling them really dont know for sure either. If it is a copy Im sorry it happened to you. Swords are always to be worn with uniform, when absent from the ship on duty ; or when on leave on foreign stations. Swords and belts, presented to officers for public services, may be worn in full dress instead of the regulation sword and belt.
Obviously, prior to 1941, the eagles head was facing the opposite way from the post-1941 swords, but otherwise, there's really no difference between a sword manufactured in January 1942 and one manufactured in January 2011. LOTS of people claim that their swords are from "WW2", but that's based on...what, exactly?
