The 152nd Open Championship begins this Thursday at Royal Troon on Scotland’s South Ayrshire coast with Scottie Scheffler (9/2), Rory McIlroy (15/2) and Ludvig Aberg among the favourites to lift the coveted Claret Jug.

However, 2023 winner Brian Harman was sent off at odds of 175/1 so we’re on the hunt for each-way plays that have what it takes to contend at this year’s links major.

2023 US Open winner a big price to channel Pebble Beach heroics

Wyndham Clark hasn’t been shooting the lights out at majors in 2024, missing the cuts at the Masters and the PGA Championship, prior to a T56 finish at the US Open.

That’s why he’s 66/1 to win the Open Championship, but at those odds he’s well worth backing to continue that belated upturn in dramatic fashion at Royal Troon on the strength of his brilliant win in the weather-shortened Pebble Beach Pro-Am in April.

Ludvig Aberg is trading at 11/1 third-favourite to win the Open, but Clark shot a course record third-round 60 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links to beat the Swede by one shot.

A T10 finish at last weekend’s Scottish Open is just the kind of promising warm to increase confidence that the Denver, Colorado native can increase his major haul here.

Tip: Wyndham Clark to win (each-way) @ 66/1

Consistent, improving Brit worth a second look amid best season yet

Wolverhampton-born Aaron Rai has been enjoying a very productive PGA Tour campaign this term, posting five top 10 finishes so far – three of which have come inside his last three events.

The most recent of those was a T4 showing at this year’s Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, a links tournament that he won back in 2020.

Rai has made the cut in each of the two majors he’s contested this season – finishing T39 in the PGA Championship – before improving to T19 in the US Open and has a previous T19 finish at the 2021 Open Championship under his belt.

Tip: Aaron Rai to win (each-way) @ 66/1
