The footballing eyes of Europe alight on Munich once again for the 2025 Nations League Final between Portugal and Spain. La Roja, the reigning champions, are 17/20 favourites to retain the trophy in normal time, with the Selecao 14/5 underdogs and the draw priced up at 13/5.

Both sides, particularly Spain, look good for goals at both ends and it would be little surprise if, much like their respective semi-finals, things came alive after the break.

Recent history of dour Iberian duels set to come to an end

Portugal have clashed with Spain four times since 2020, including twice during the 2022/23 Nations League groups, in matches ending 0-0, 0-0, 1-1 and 1-0 to the Spaniards.

However, the last of those encounters took place before current La Roja boss Luis de la Fuente took over and any kind of unders bet feels hugely counterintuitive based on their recent form.

Spain’s two-legged quarter-final with the Netherlands saw both legs end normal time tied at two apiece, while their semi final against France was a 5-4 epic.

Over 3.5 goals looks very reasonably priced at 6/4 given the favourites’ tendency to create and concede and Portugal, stocked with superb attacking talent and recent Champions League winners like Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves and Vitinha have the talent to play their part.

Their 2-1 semi-final win could have been much higher-scoring but for goalkeeping heroics at both ends and Roberto Martinez’s men have hit five against Poland and Denmark inside their last five Nations League outings.

Expect scoring action to be concentrated after the interval

A common characteristic of Spain’s recent slew of goal-heavy games is that the majority tend to come in the second half, making ‘highest scoring half – second half’ a decent bet at 21/20.

The bet has clicked in six of the European champions’ last seven games, culminating in the Nations League semi-final, which saw seven of its nine goals netted in the second period.

Our suggested bet has also landed in four of Portugal’s past five games in the competition, including their quarter-final second leg, when four of the five scored in normal time came after the break.
