Unbeaten when completing over fences, Galopin Des Champs has swept all before him over the bigger obstacles and has been at the head of the Gold Cup market for nearly a year now. He is clearly a top-notch animal and was very impressive in the Irish Gold Cup, but the issue for Willie Mullins’ star has always been stamina. He was certainly not stopping at the line at Leopardstown, but that race wasn’t strongly run and he probably outspeeded some proper stayers there. The Gold Cup is likely to be a very different test and, on breeding, it’s not one Galopin Des Champs is going to improve for. On that basis, there’s a chance that the son of Timos might find one staying on up the hill better than him.
